How To Keep Pigs From Losing Meat in The Summer?

2025-04-23

As temperatures soar during the summer months, farmers are facing the challenge of preventing their pigs from losing weight, a phenomenon known as "summer weight drop".

Pigs are very sensitive to high and low temperatures. High temperatures not only cause pigs to lose appetite and grow slowly, but can also cause disease and increase mortality. To cope with the effects of heat on your pigs, you can prepare in two ways.

1.Environment aspects

Pigs are thermostatic animals, high summer temperatures can reduce feed intake and affect growth. So it is very important to cool down and ventilate the pigsty in the high temperature of summer.

Cooling of pigsties can be done by installing cooling equipment and by choosing insulating building materials. For example, you can use spray cooling equipment, water vaporization to absorb heat and reduce the local temperature. However, you should pay attention to control the amount and time of spraying to avoid high humidity in the pig house. The temperature of the hog barn can be lowered by installing a water curtain cooling system. You can also use plastic slats, which are well insulated and easy to clean.

Good ventilation carries away heat, moisture and harmful gases from the pigsty. Natural ventilation can enhance air circulation by installing windows and vents in the pig house. Mechanical ventilation can increase the frequency of air exchange by installing equipment such as exhaust fans.

Summer humidity can also have an impact on pigs. Excessive humidity can make pigs feel stuffy and increase the risk of heat stress. If humidity is too high in a pig house, use dehumidification equipment to reduce it. At the same time, pay attention to the drinking water system and drainage system of the pigsty to avoid waterlogging.

2.Dietary aspects

The high temperatures of summer can cause pigs to eat less, so it is important to improve the nutrition of the feed by increasing the intake of protein, vitamins and minerals. For example, add high-quality fishmeal, soybean meal and other proteins to the feed, and supplement with the right amount of vitamin C and vitamin E.

Increase the palatability of feed. Pigs' appetites may be affected during the summer months, and appropriate amounts of sweeteners or flavors can be added to the feed to increase intake. For example, sweetening substances such as sucrose and fructose are added, or flavoring agents with enticing effects are added, such as milky, fruity, and other flavoring agents.

Changing feeding practices, adjusting feeding times, using smaller feedings with more frequent meals, as well as choosing to feed at cooler times of the day, such as early morning and late evening.

The hotter the weather, the greater the water needs, to provide sufficient, clean water, drink water to cool down, drink enough water to grow appetite. You can equip your pigs with nipple drinker. Nipple drinker, unfettered, ready to drink and uncontaminated.
