Russia's Meat Products Gain Access to the Chinese Market

2023-08-01

According to the announcement by the General Administration of Customs of China, in 2021, three Russian poultry and its by-products production enterprises, one beef and its by-products production enterprise, and one poultry and its products storage enterprise obtained qualifications for exporting their products to China. This marks the first time for Russian meat products to enter the Chinese market. On July 10th this year, the Russian Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Service and the General Administration of Customs of China discussed the possibility of supplying Russian pork to China.

The representatives from the Russian Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Service and their counterparts from the General Administration of Customs of China discussed the issue of combating African swine fever in both Russia and China through a video conference. The Russian Federal Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance Service pointed out that the joint efforts between the two agencies will enable the assessment of risks related to supplying Russian pork to China and the development of effective mechanisms to ensure the safety of such product trade. Currently, Russia does not supply pork to China. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko stated at the end of March that Russia will continue negotiations on pork supply to China, and domestic companies are ready to undergo relevant inspections from the Chinese side.

She also mentioned that Russia ranks among the top two in supplying poultry meat to China, with a 10% growth in poultry meat exports last year. The beef supply remained at the 2021 level, reaching approximately 21,000 tons.
